Hokkaido, Japan
Hokkaido is not only renowned for stunning landscapes but also the rich cultural heritage passed down through generations, particularly among the Ainu people. The indigenous Ainu people have a deep connection to this land, and their myths and legends offer a captivating glimpse into their worldview.
One such tale is the Ainu creation myth. The legend goes that at the beginning of the world, there was only sludge made from water and earth. In this state, nothing existed except the thunder demons in the clouds and the first self-created kamuy (a spiritual or divine being). This being then sent down a bird spirit to shape the lands to make the world habitable.
Another story centres around Ae-oyna-kamuy, a central figure in Ainu mythology. He is said to be a divine being descended from the heavens to guide humanity by teaching the Ainu essential skills like weaving, carving, fishing, hunting, and medicine. As a champion of the people and a cultural hero, Ae-oyna-kamuy also fought on behalf of humanity — in one instance, destroying the personification of famine. Yet, disappointed by the decline of the Ainu, Ae-oyna-kamuy eventually leaves, with some myths saying he returned to the heavens while others say he left for another country.
At Club Med Tomamu Hokkaido, visitors can explore this unique culture by embarking on a heritage tour, where they can learn about traditional Ainu crafts, music, and rituals.
